Pads in Drum Racks

(30 minutes)

  1. Each pad represents one of the 128 available MIDI notes from C-4 to C4. Try playing them:
    • C1 Bass Drum 1
    • C#1 Side Stick / Rim
    • D1 Snare 1
    • Eb1 Hand Clap
    • E1 Snare 2
    • F1 Low Floor Tom
    • F#1 Closed Hi Hat
    • G1 High Floor Tom
    • Ab1 Pedal Hi-Hat
    • A1 Low Tom
    • Bb1 Open Hi-Hat
    • B1 Low-Mid Tom
    • C2 Hi Mid Tom
    • C#2 Crash Cymbal 1
    • D2 High Tom
    • Eb2 Ride Cymbal 1

  2. The pad overview to the left shifts the set of visible pads up or down in groups of 16, either by dragging the view selector to a new area or by using your computer keyboard’s up and down arrow keys.

  3. Almost any object from Live’s browser — samples, effects, instruments and presets — can be dragged onto a pad
    • Try dropping a sample onto any pad - the dropped sample is ready to play from the pad’s note.
    • This means you can replace specific drum sounds e.g. kick or snare, to get the feel you want
    • Dragging a pad to another pad swaps the note mapping between the pads.
    • Try different samples in the drum patterns that you have created in previous lessons

Customizing Drum Racks

(30 minutes)

When you double click on any Drum Pad, you will see that it contains a Simpler. You can see these controls by clicking on the 'Controls' tab

1. If you switch on the Filter, you can make the sound more muffled or brighter by changing the Frequency

2. You can change where the sound appears in left or right stereo image by changing the Pan. This is good for high hats, toms, and percussion

3. You can tune the drum (pitch up or down) using Transpose (large amounts) and Detune (small amounts)

4. If you increase the Attack, the sound will start more slowly

5. If you increase the Release, the sound takes longer to die out when you release the key

6. You can change the volume of the sound with Volume knob

7. Try customizing your Drum Rack, then playing back one of the drum patterns you have created before.
