7 Steps to Remixing a Track in Techno

 1. Isolate and extract parts

You can get remix packs (songs split into their individual multi-track stems of vocals, beats, instruments etc.) from remix contest sites like Metapop.

If you need the vocal from a song, but don't have the multi-track stems or the vocal recording on its own, these free websites use Deezer's AI technology 'Spleeter' to isolate and extract the vocals (and also some instrument parts) from songs

2. Find the key, BPM and chords of the song

Once you have the vocal or other parts, you'll want to know what key and BPM the song is in. You may also want to know what the original chord progression is.
  • Tunebat https://tunebat.com/ is a Key & BPM Database and Music Finder
  • Chordify https://chordify.net/ uses AI to identify the chords of any music or song and displays them interactively as the song plays

3. Choose the parts of the song you want to use and Warp them

Usually the key part that you want is the riff (main melody) or the vocal.

Warping enables you to change the Tempo of the song. Read more at https://library.berklee.edu/knowledge-base/warping-ableton-live-basics

4. Plan the structure of the Remix

Use a track that you already know and copy the structure.

You can also use a standard dance mix structure e.g.
  • Dance Mix structure #1
    • Intro
    • Build
    • Drop
    • Breakdown
    • Build
    • Drop
    • Outtro
  • Dance Mix structure #2
    • Intro
    • Part A
    • Part B
    • Drop
    • Part A
    • Part B
    • Breakdown
    • Build
    • Drop
Use Locators to mark out where each part will be

5. Create your own melodies and chords

You may be staying on one chord in Techno. If you want to build chord progressions in the key of the song, you can get ideas from https://autochords.com/

Use the Ableton MIDI Effect 'Scale' to ensure that all of your notes are in the same key as the sample you are remixing.

Use the Ableton MIDI Effect 'Arpeggiator' to generate patterns

6. Add Loops and Samples

Use some samples and loops to give you inspiration and vibe

Mind Flux https://www.mind-flux.com/freebies-1

MyLoops (4 GB total) https://www.myloops.net/download-free-techno-samples

Free Sample Packs (doorway to lots of sites) https://free-sample-packs.com/techno/

You can also chop up the original sample from the song, or any of these loops, by dropping them into Ableton Simpler in the Slice mode.

7. Add Audio Effects

Create rhythm with Delay and Echo

Create mood and atmosphere with Reverb and Hybrid Reverb

Turn beats into music with Resonator and Spectral Sound

Add grit and glitch with Pedal, Amp, and Beat Repeat
